GMHBA PAC

Greetings to the members of the GMHBA:

Are we having fun yet?  The housing market is setting all the wrong kids of records and very good people in this industry are having trouble staying afloat.  The situation is fast becoming desperate and you would think that your state and local government would appreciate how bad things really are for one of the largest sectors of the economy.  Sadly, many do not or possibly they don't care.

Amidst the struggle to supply the goods and services that go into new homes and remodeling services, the legislative process marches on.  This past year alone saw over 90 bills introduced that would impact the housing industry in one way or another.

We started the year with an historic vote of the House and Senate to repeal the workers compensation law that would have cost construction companies tens of thousands of dollars in premiums.  This industry said "NO" and we forced everyone in the state government to listen to us.  That was no small victory and everyone who helped bring about the repeal should be very proud.  We also wrestled with the new Shoreland Protection Act, successfully postponing the effective date while modifying the metrics that made this legislation unworkable for those of us who build on waterfront.  We got an important law passed to reform growth management ordinances.  This bill will be critical when normal market conditions return and towns find it much more difficult to turn off the building permit spigot.  We are currently fighting licensing of modular home providers and the overregulation of stormwater impacts.  Coming soon will be a battle over a statewide mandate of fire sprinklers in every new home and many other issues too numerous to list.

All of these successes show how important and influential the NH Home Builders have become.  The Manchester local is particularly well represented both on the Legislative Committee as well as the NH BuildPAC Trustees.  By day, members are active in front of legislative committees and by night, we attend fundraisers and political events to build relationships with the lawmakers who hold your profitability in their hands.  Members volunteer to do this work in whatever spare time is available to them.

The PAC money that gives us this vital access to lawmakers is entirely funded through voluntary contributions.  As is often the case, the majority of funds come from a minority of our members.  We all benefit from the hard work of our volunteers and staff.  Let's not let this lousy economy stop us from continuing the fight for our industry.

Please be as generous as you can manage.  In the past, we've gratefully received contributions as little as $25 and as much as $1,000.  Many contribute $100 but if you can afford a little more, please consider a larger donation.  I know that you are all aware of the work that is done on your behalf.  We report to you through our local newsletter and at our monthly membership meetings.  Your contribution will send a strong message that you support and appreciate the work of these volunteers who go to Concord and fight for everyone connected with the homebuilding industry.

Best wishes to you all in these difficult times.

Your contributions can be made in the form of a company check.  Please make it out to "GMHBA PAC" and send it to: Paul Morin, GMHBA PAC Chairman, 35 Norris Rd, Weare, NH 03821
